Gogoi seeks new trains for Assam
February 7th, 2012 - 8:31 pm ICT by IANSGuwahati, Feb 7 (IANS) Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi wants more trains for Assam, particularly to link Chennai and Mumbai.
Gogoi made the request to Railway Minister Dinesh Trivedi in New Delhi Tuesday, an official statement here said.
He urged the minister to declare the North East Frontier (NF) Railway as a dedicated rail zone exclusively for northeastern states.
Gogoi said Assam badly needed a new daily express train between Guwahati and Chennai via Kolkata and another between Guwahati and Mumbai.
He complained that it now takes long hours for people in Assam to travel to the southern and western parts of the country.
The chief minister also sought a new super-fast express train connecting Jorhat-Sivasagar-Moran-Dibrugarh.
“If this happens, the travel time between Guwahati and Upper Assam will be considerably reduced,” Gogoi said.
