Bharatiya Janata Party Raipur, Sep 8 (IANS) GMR Energy’s upcoming 1,370 MW coal-fired project in Chhattisgarh faces a court case for beginning construction work before getting permission from the state government, Chief Minister Raman Singh told the state assembly Thursday.

“The construction permission to GMR for its two units, each of 685 MW, at Raikheda village in Raipur district was granted June 13 this year, but the company began work much before and, finally, a case was filed against it,” he informed Congress member Shiv Kumar Daharia in a written reply.

Raman Singh, who heads the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government in coal-rich Chhattisgarh since November 2003, gave the information when Daharia sought details of all power agreements made by the state since it came into existence in November 2000.

The chief minister said that the state had signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with GMR Energy for the project in June 2007.

A GMR Energy spokesperson told IANS by email: “The works at the site were for constructing temporary sheds for security personnel and for boundary walls. Plant works have commenced now - after receiving the approval from minstry of environment and forests and the state government.”

Raman Singh further said that the state government had signed 98 power plant MoUs since the formation of the state and also gave details of agreements that were scrapped, including those with Tata Power Company Limited, Mumbai, and Essar Power Limited, New Delhi, for 1,000 MW and 1,200 MW projects, respectively.
