GM to recall over 1.5 million vehicles over fire concerns

GM announced a recall of over 1.5 million vehicles because of fire concerns. According to the company officials there is apparently some problem with the heated windshield wiper fluid system, which could be the cause of a fire.

The heated windshield wiper fluid system has troubled GM for quite some time, as this is the second time in 2 years, that GM has been forced to recall vehicles over the issue.

The models which have been affected include pickup trucks, sport utility vehicles, crossovers and passenger car models which are from the model years 2006 to 2009. The last recall over the same issue was 2 years ago in 2008, but there were reports of fires again in some of the vehicles, that had been fixed by GM in the recall.

This time around, GM is looking for a permanent solution to the problem and they said that they are going to disable the heated washer fluid system totally, which would eliminate the root cause of the fires totally. They would also pay $100 to the owners of the vehicles, because the heated washer fluid system would be disabled and rendered useless.

“While our analysis shows the number of incidents is very small compared with the number of vehicles on the road, we want our customers to have complete peace of mind,” according to Jeff Boyer, who is GM’s executive director of safety.

The latest GM recall would affect the 2006-2009 model year Buick Lucerne, Cadillac DTS, and Hummer H2; 2008-2009 Buick Enclave and Cadillac CTS; 2007-2009 Cadillac Escalade, Escalade ESV and Escalade EXT; 2007-2009 Chevrolet Avalanche, Silverado, Suburban and Tahoe; 2007-2009 GMC Acadia, Sierra, Yukon and Yukon XL; 2007-2009 Saturn Outlook; and 2009 Chevrolet Traverse.
