Pontiac New York Nov 1 (THAINDIAN NEWS) The 84 year long relationship between GM and the Pontiac brand dealers ended on last night with the expiration of the contract between the two parties. GM announced that it will discontinue the production of the brand next year after the sale of the car slumped to lowest levels.

The brand was a leading among the leading brands on the American streets in when it was established in 1926, until its sales declined in the 50s. However General Motors managed to revive the sales later but when GM announced its bankruptcy in 2009, it meant the brand was in danger and the announcement by GM on Sunday did not shock many people.

The brand’s popularity soared in the 70’s when it was featured in several movies. However when GM started copying design for the Pontiac from other companies, the brand lost its identity and the decline started. However GM managed to come up with the GTO, which had V8 turbo engine, and it managed to improve the sales a bit before slumping again.

One of the lowest sales of the brand was in 2008 when the car managed to sell just 267000. That figure is just a third of what the brand recorded in 1968.
