Global tender soon for fibreglass cooking gas cylinders
August 5th, 2010 - 10:36 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, Aug 5 (IANS) Oil marketing companies have been asked to call for global tender to set up domestic manufacturing facility for fibreglass cooking gas cylinders, parliament was Thursday informed.
“The government has advised public sector oil marketing companies (OMCs) to call for a global expression of interest to set up facilities for manufacturing of composite cylinders domestically,” Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas Jitin Prasada informed the Lok Sabha in a written reply.
These new composite or fiberglass cylinders will be introduced as an alternative to the standard steel cylinders and will be available for consumers willing to pay a higher initial security deposit.
These cylinders will be lighter in weight and have a translucent body, which will show the level of LPG present in the cylinder.
Answering another question, Prasada said that there were no rules regarding age of LPG cylinders, therefore none of them could be termed as overage.
But, as per the Gas Cylinder Rules 2004, all cylinders are tested 10 years after year of manufacturing and then subsequently every five years. “The cylinders which are declared unfit in these tests are taken out of circulation and de-shaped,” he said.
There are currently 17.84 crore cylinders in circulation in the country.
