‘Give better wages and social security to contract labour’
August 29th, 2010 - 10:15 am ICT by IANSNew Delhi, Aug 29 (IANS) The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) has said there is a need to engage multi-stakeholders and to bring in social security and flexibility in the contract labour segment for healthy industrial growth.
Arun Maira, member of the Planning Commission, said at a conference organised by CII on the contract labour issue here Saturday: “Flexibility for the industry will ensure a win-win situation for both the employer and the employee.”
He also said that the organized sector is not creating enough jobs and that there is a dire need to create 13-15 million jobs over the next 10 years to address employment requirements. Most of the speakers at the conference were of the opinion that there is a need to ensure better wages and social security to the workers and flexibility to the industry to match the demand and supply as per their needs.
“The need is for a ‘level playing field’ and focus on creating a mechanism to build harmonious relationship between employer and worker,” said P.C. Chaturvedi, secretary, Ministry of Labour and Employment.
According to Jagdish Khattar, chairman of the CII industrial relations council, and Carnation Auto, the industry is keen to address the contract labour issues and the real challenge is to create the right balance.
“We need to protect the workers’ interests and not the job. We should work towards ensuring more benefits to the worker leading to higher productivity,” Khattar added.
