June 11th, 2010 - 12:33 am ICT by Aishwarya BhattGE is all set to recall around 181,000 washing machines, due to fire and shock hazards. The Consumer Product Safety Commission confirmed the news on Thursday.
According to reports, there is a faulty wire in the machine, which can trigger off a fire, if it comes in contact with any metallic part when the machine is in operation. Till now there have been no causalities due to the defect. However there have been 7 incidents in which smoke was reported to be seen coming out of the machine.
The machines, which are part of the recall, were made in China. They were sold during the time period of December 2006 to May 2010. The cost of the washing machines was around $700.
GE has advised its consumers to stop using the washing machines with immediate effect. They have also advised that the machine ought to be unplugged from the electrical socket as well, and the user should get in touch with GE for a free repair as part of the recall. They have also warned their users that the washing machines shouldn’t be operated at all, before getting them repaired by GE technicians, under any circumstances.
