June 2, 2010 (Pen Men at Work): According to The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration the 2010 model of Ford Fusion and Mercury Milan sedans have potential dangers from floor mats. It has issued caution to the owners of these vehicles that they should not stack the all-weather floor mats on top of the mats that come with their cars. The gas pedals could get stuck in these mats posing danger. Both NHTSA and Ford have warned the drivers against stacking these mats.

A statement by NHTSA said that the optional floor mat should only be placed in the driver’s side foot after the removing the standard, carpeted floor mat. The statement further read that it is the only way to make sure that ‘All Weather’ optional floor mat is secured to the floor.

Until now there had been reports of three complaints on gas pedals on the Ford vehicles getting stuck after an all weather floor mat slipped forward and trapped it. But thankfully none of these complains mentioned any injury or death.

Toyota recalled its cars last fall over similar gas pedal issue. It started after the news of family getting killed in an accident, which was apparently the result of gas pedal getting trapped by an all-weather floor mat. The Toyota recall covered as many as 5 million vehicles.
