Washington DC, Mar 9 (THAINDIAN NEWS) Consumer complaints received by the Federal Trade Commission in 2010 have been ranked and released.

The commission received a total of about 1,339,265 complaints in 2010. The number one complaint was identity theft- it has been number one for 11 consecutive years now. The complainants claimed that they have lost money and other valuables as a result of their identities being stolen. Identity theft accounted for about 19 percent of all the complaints received by the commission.

Of course the way that debt collectors go about their business also raised some complaints. About 11 percent of the complaints had to do with debt collection.

One interesting thing about this year’s list is that for the first time imposter managed to get to the top ten list. Imposter is someone posing as a person in authority so that he/she would dupe another person. More than 60,000 of such complaints were received by the commission representing four percent of the total complaints received.

The complete top ten list is; Identity Theft; Debt Collection; Internet Services; Prizes, Sweepstakes and Lotteries; Shop-at-Home and Catalog Sales; Imposter Scams; Internet Auctions; Foreign Money/Counterfeit Check Scams; Telephone and Mobile Services and Credit Cards.
