March 8th, 2011 - 9:10 pm ICT by IANS
New Delhi, March 8 (IANS) In an International Women’s Day gift to girl students, Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee Tuesday announced free monthly tickets for local travel to girl students up to college level.
“All girls up to college level will get free monthly seasonal tickets,” Banerjee said replying to the debate on the Railway Budget in the Rajya Sabha.
The Railway Budget was later returned by the upper house. It has already been passed by the Lok Sabha, and the Rajya Sabha’s approval gives it the final nod of parliament.
Banerjee also announced setting up vocational training centres for girls.
Earlier, participating in the debate, Communist Party of India-Marxist member Shyamal Chakraborty attacked the railway minister, saying that the railways had been spoiled.
Banerjee reacted sharply, calling it “dirty politics”.
“They are doing dirty politics,” she said.
