France may see closure of 4,000 hotels
December 16th, 2011 - 5:39 pm ICT by IANSParis, Dec 16 (IANS) France’s hotel industry is likely to witness closure of 4,000 hotels — especially the small independent ones — over next three years, French hotel authorities have warned.
“French hotel industry has lost 3,400 enterprises in 15 years. Four thousand additional hotels will be closed over the next three years,” Xinhua quoted the local daily Le Figaro citing Mark Watkins, chairman of the Modernisation Committee of the French Hotel Industry as saying.
Figaro said he was particularly concerned about the difficulties being faced by independent hotels, adding half of these hotels were now in deficit, or at best at equilibrium.
He also said 56 percent of owners of the independent hotels were seeking to sell.
Although France ranked as the world’s top tourist destination, the average amount of money spent by tourists in the country was much lower than that in the US or Germany, he said.
