The car has a plethora of safety features including anti lock brakes, dual front airbags, stability and traction control with active headrests. The cool SUV also features adaptive cruise control along with Rear-seatinflatable seat belts. Ford Group sustainability, environment and safety engineering’s VP Sue Cischke said that “The Ford Explorer sets a new safety standard for high-tech innovation”.

From the pre-release demand it is quite clear that the Ford Explorer 2011 has hit the sweet spot for the buyers. Even though it is a SUV the Explorer 2011 offers several features that one normally sees in a mid range sedan and this may boost its sales. The IIHS reported that 66 models got the Top Safety Pick award which included a minivan, 22 SUVs and 40 cars. Most of the cars that have got selected have excellent electronic stability control and impact control. Last year just 27 cars got this distinction. Hyundai as well as Volkswagen branded cars also won this award. Toyota, Ford and GM also have produced 8 winners each. Subaru got 5 awards and it was the only company with a car winning in each segment it took part in.

All the automakers this year proved that they have taken note of rising concern of safety among the customers. Ford and Hyundai showed remarkable improvement in car roof strength.
