Fog lifts over Delhi, but air, rail backlog continues
January 25th, 2010 - 12:14 pm ICT by IANS ( Leave a comment )New Delhi, Jan 25 (IANS) A relatively warm and clear morning greeted Delhi Monday, bringing respite from the dense fog the city witnessed for the past week. However, trouble continued for air and rail travellers due to the backlog of delays and cancelled trips.
The national capital recorded a minimum temperature of 10.3 degrees Celsius, two notches above average for this time of the year.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the visibility at 8.30 a.m. was above 500 metres.
While a majority of flights were running on time, the backlog delayed a few services.
“Flight operation are normal at Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) as runway visibility is normal. Some flights have been delayed due to backlog clearance,” an airport official said.
The situation was worse at New Delhi railway station as 17 trains were cancelled, 30 were running late by around three hours and 12 were rescheduled, a Northern Railway official said.
“Fog cover has lifted in Delhi but dense fog prevails in other parts of the country, thus affecting train schedule. Backlog clearance is another major problem and it will take a week for the train schedule to normalise,” the official said.
The weatherman has forecast fog in the morning Tuesday and said that the maximum temperature would settle around 23 degrees Celsius while the minimum would be around nine degrees.
