Fog closes Chandigarh airport again
January 19th, 2010 - 3:01 pm ICT by IANSChandigarh, Jan 19 (IANS) All flights from the airport here were again cancelled Tuesday due to fogging, leaving a large number of passengers stranded, an official said.
“Authorities have cancelled all the flights for today (Tuesday). We are still not sure about tomorrow (Wednesday) as it all depends on the weather,” said the airport official.
No flights took off or landed at the airport Monday either. Chandigarh airport had remained grounded Jan 1-14 due to dense fog and overcast conditions.
“Our Instrument Landing System (ILS), which helps during foggy weather, is lying defunct for the last six months. All the airlines have suffered losses worth lakhs of rupees due to this glitch,” the official added.
In normal conditions, a plane can land safely if visibility is 2,800-3,000 metres. The ILS can help if visibility is reduced to 1,200-1,400 metres.
On normal days, over a dozen flights arrive and depart from this airport and all the major airlines like Air India, Jet Airways, Kingfisher, Go Air and MDLR operate from here.
