Flood-hit Haryana farmers get relief
August 5th, 2010 - 7:03 pm ICT by IANSChandigarh, Aug 5 (IANS) Farmers affected by floods last month in parts of Haryana have been given a waiver by the state government in payment of lease money for land leased from panchayats (village councils)
Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda Thursday announced waiver of 50 percent lease money for those farmers who had taken panchayat land on lease. This will be applicable to farmers whose crops were damaged and they could not sow their fields again.
Hooda said that it has also been decided to compensate farmers, whose tubewells remained submerged during the floods, for power dues.
He also announced compensation to all the farmers whose tubewells have been damaged due to recent floods.
The chief minister also instructed the deputy commissioners of flood affected districts to get the survey of damaged tubewells completed alongwith special girdawari (loss assessment) done by Aug 15.
He said that the Haryana government is pressing the central government to announce compensation for flood affected farmers at the earliest.
Flooding in Ambala, Kurukshetra, Kaithal, Sirsa and Yamunanagar districts in Haryana last month, following heavy rainfall and breaches in rivers and canals, had inundated several towns and villages and submerged thousands of acres of agricultural land with freshly sown paddy crop.
