Fire breaks out at Mumbai container yard, one killed

Mumbai, May 11 (IANS) One person was killed and at least another injured when a fire broke out in a chemical container in the yard at the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust here Wednesday afternoon, police said.

According to police, fire fighters were trying to control the blaze in the yard at the Container Freight Station in Navghar village where hundreds of containers are kept.

The dead person has not yet been identified. Unconfirmed reports said at least 20 people were injured and taken to a local hospital.

The cause of the fire, which caused a blast, is not yet known, Navi Mumbai Police Commissioner Jawed Ahmed said.

The container reportedly belongs to the Maersk Limited, but company officials declined to speak on the fire when contacted by IANS.

The JNPT is the country’s biggest port and is located near Nhava-Sheva in Navi Mumbai.
