Faulty alarm causes GoAir flight to make emergency landing

New Delhi, June 6 (IANS) A faulty smoke detector on board a GoAir flight was blamed by officials Monday for an emergency landing made by the aircraft here at IGI airport, just 17 minutes after it took-off for Bangalore.

“The captain detected a smoke warning in the cargo compartment and followed the operational procedures to land back in Delhi,” a senior GoAir official told IANS.

Flight G8-201 from Delhi to Bangalore took off at 9.23 a.m. with 165 passengers on board and returned to the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) airport here at 9.40 a.m., he said.

“After the aircraft landed back, a complete investigation was conducted into the matter. No fire or smoke in any cargo bay containers was found. We suspect spurious smoke warning,” he added.

The aircraft, an Airbus A320, was one of the latest planes, manufactured and pressed into service in 2010, and GoAir will raise the issue with the European aircraft manufacturer.

“The aircraft (VT-WAM) in which this spurious warning was detected is a brand new aircraft and we are taking this up with Airbus Industries,” the official said.

The airline company said that all passengers on board, who had to go through emergency landing protocol and subsequent evacuation procedures, were safe and were being provided assistance till the aircraft takes off again.

“Aircraft will take off soon after all the necessary rectification work as per the trouble shooting procedures laid out by the Airbus Industries and mandatory checks,” he said.

Emergency services posted at the IGI airport said that the situation was brought under control and operations procedures meant for these situations were followed.

Meanwhile, Delhi Fire Service (DFS) said that all passengers were evacuated as per procedure without sustaining any injury or casualty.

“Passengers were evacuated immediately. All the passengers are reported to be safe on board,” A.K. Sharma, DFS director, told IANS.
