FAA to fine Continental Airlines to the tune of $325,000
May 14th, 2010 - 8:37 pm ICT by Aishwarya BhattWashington DC, May 14 (THAINDIAN NEWS) The Federal Aviation Authority has fined the Continental Airlines about $325,000 for using a plane that had some problem with its landing gear. The FAA said Continental Airlines flew the plane more than a dozen times without fixing the problem.
The FAA said Continental Airline violated federal regulations when it failed to record the maintenance or fix Continental Boeing 737, even though the airline had detected that there was some problem with the landing gear in December 2008.
The Continental Boeing 737 first observed the problem in December 2008, and the crewmembers of the flight alerted the Maintenance Department of the airlines. The maintenance department then diagnosed the problem as a faulty landing gear, but they failed to fix it and went ahead and even flew the plane on more than dozen flights.
The FAA said the December 2008 flight, which was originally bound for Los Angeles, ended up in Phoenix, as the plane was burning excessive fuel.
Officials of Continental Airlines have not issued any comment on the issue and the FAA says the issue of maintenance cannot be taken lightly at all. Continental Airlines now have 30 days to respond to the FAA charge.
