Equity markets start in the green

Mumbai, Aug 20 (IANS) Indian equity markets, which opened higher Wednesday in line with other Asian peers, were in the green in early trade. There was buying interest in realty, metal and capital goods stocks. The 30-share benchmark index of the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), the Sensex, opened with a gain of 66.84 points at 14,610.57. Five minutes into trading, it was at 14,687.04, 143.31 points or 0.99 percent above its closing figure Tuesday.

At the same time the S&P CNX Nifty index of the National Stock Exchange was trading at 4,411.95 with a gain of 43.70 points or 1.00 percent from its previous close.

The market breadth was positive. On BSE, 650 shares advanced, 165 declined and 19 remained unchanged.

Sterlite Industries, Jaiprakash Associate and Reliance Communications were among the gainers while Tata Motors, ICICI Bank and ONGC Corporation were among the losers in initial trade.

Other Asian markets were also trading higher.
