Equities markets register modest gains in initial trade (Lead)

Mumbai, May 23 (IANS) The Indian equities markets which opened with a positive gap Friday registered modest early gains, with buying interest in key sectors. The 30 share benchmark index of the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), the Sensex, opened with a gain of 51.69 points at 16,958.80. Ten minutes into trading, it had reached 17,040.79 with a gain of 133.68 points or 0.79 percent from its closing figure Thursday.

At the same time the S&P Nifty index of the National Stock Exchange was trading at 5,048.35 points with a gain of 22.93 points or 0.46 percent from its previous close.

The market breadth was positive. On BSE 976 shares advanced, 248 declined and 17 remained unchanged.

Jaiprakash Associates, HDFC Bank and Bharti Airtel were among the early gainers while Grasim Industries, Tata Motors and ICICI Bank were among the losers in initial trade.
