PHOENIX, ARIZONA (BNO NEWS) – The Arizona Department of Commerce Energy Office awarded more than $4.8 million in Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grants (EECBG) to 50 communities and five counties for energy-related projects, Governor Jan Brewer announced on Friday.

“These are the first grants awarded of the $9.5 million available in funding to Arizona’s rural areas - communities with a population of 35,000 or less – and each is a shining example of innovative energy projects that will benefit Arizona,” said Brewer. “Each of these 50 EECGB projects should create jobs, while providing long-term reductions in utility costs – saving local dollars for years to come.”

The EECBG program supports projects to improve energy efficiency and reduce energy use in Arizona cities, towns and counties. This is the first time that such program was funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.

The Recovery Act funds will finance projects focusing in building energy audits; energy efficiency retrofits; energy efficiency and conservation programs; development and implementation of transportation programs; traffic signals and street lighting; and renewable energy technologies on government buildings.

“These are the types of projects that have the best payback on an energy-saving investment. In addition, ten communities are pursuing potential renewable energy projects that not only generate power, but can also educate the public on the benefits of this technology,” an Energy Office official said.
