Energy high on India-Myanmar talks agenda

New Delhi, July 26 (IANS) With India’s growing stake in neighbouring Myanmar’s gas fields, energy security will be high on the agenda of talks when Myanmar ruler General Than Shwe meets with the Indian leadership here Tuesday.
Than Shwe, the leader of military junta, is on a five-day visit to India and will hold formal talks with the Indian delegation, led by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Tuesday evening.
India’s state-run oil firms, the overseas arm of Oil and Natural Gas Corp and and GAIL have a 30-percent interest in two gas-producing blocks in Myanmar as part of a consortium which is supplying the hydrocarbon gas produced to China.
India had earlier tried to secure the gas sales from the two blocks, but the military junta in 2004 had decided in favour of China. Besides, India also has three deepwater exploration blocks.
“ONGC Videsh has its hands full in Myanmar in various projects but there is enough scope to improve supplies of gas, especially since the Bangladesh gas project is going rather slowly,” said a senior official in the petroleum ministry.
Officials said the two companies — which will continue to pursue hydrocarbon interests in Myanmar — are also part of the pipeline project which will link the two blocks to China. The total investment by the state companies is around $1 billion.
