Chennai, Nov 4 (IANS) Sugar major EID Parry (India) Ltd has tied up with tractor manufacturer New Holland Fiat (India) Ltd to distribute its harvestors and other equipment and promote farm mechanisation, a top company official said Friday.

“This partnership will help us fulfil our plan of aiding farmers, who are our most important stakeholders, by providing farm mechanisation solutions. This activity will involve an investment of Rs.100 crore over two-three years to increase the penetration of mechanisation in our areas,” Managing Director of EID Parry Ravindra S. Singhvi told reporters.

According to him, the company plans to reach around 15,000 farmers and later increase the number to 40,000.

He said there was severe shortage of labour at the farm level.

According to officials, the manual labour cost of harvesting each tonne of sugarcane ranges between Rs.300-800. This would be around Rs.36 per tonne if the process was mechanised.

Farm equipment are in the price range of Rs.8.5 million to Rs.14 million.
