EC reviews Supreme Court’s verdict in ex-House Speaker case
July 10th, 2008 - 11:59 am ICT by Amrit Rashmisrisethi
The Election Commission (EC) is reviewing the Supreme Court’s issuance of a red card to the former House Speaker before setting up a committee on the dissolution of the People Power Party (PPP).
EC Secretary-General Suthipol Thaweechaikarn (สุทธิพล ทวีชัยการ) says he has received the Supreme Court’s verdict which upholds EC’s decision to disqualify PPP party-list MP and ex-House Speaker Yongyuth Tiyapairat. EC’s meeting today will decide whether the verdict can lead to the dissolution of PPP.
Mr Suthipol affirms EC has no bias against Mr Yongyuth and it will review the PPP dissolution case in line with standards it used with the Chart Thai party and the Matchima Thipataya party.
As for the dissolution cases of Chart Thai and Matchima Thipataya, the secretary-general says EC and the Attorney-General will attend a meeting to discuss the cases tomorrow. The Attorney-General suggests that the dissolution cases should use standards which are different from those used in a red care issuance, Mr Suthipol says.
