Kolkata, Nov 15 (IANS) The locomotive running staff comprising guards and drivers of the Eastern Railway here Tuesday went on a hunger strike protesting against staff shortage.

“The number of trains and their frequency has increased rapidly but in comparison the locomotive running staff has not. Because of shortage of staff, we have to work for 16 to 17 hours a day,” said a driver.

The drivers and guards under the aegis of All India Loco Running Staff Association sat on protest at the Eastern Railway head quarters at Fairlie Place in the city.

“We get fatigued when we work beyond the stipulated 8 hours. In case of any accident who will take the responsibility? We informed the authorities several times earlier but in vain. We are now forced to sit on a hunger strike,” said another protestor, adding that if their demands were not met they will have to resort to suspension of work.

Among other demands, the protestors want a risk allowance and opportunity for sufficient rest after work.
