Early trade sees modest gains in equity markets (Lead)

Mumbai, July 7 (IANS) Indian equity markets recorded modest gains in early trade Monday, mirroring strong cues from other Asian markets. There was buying interest in banking, power and capital goods stocks. The 30-share benchmark index of the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), the Sensex, opened with a gain of 107.92 points at 13,561.92. Ten minutes into trading, it had reached 13,695.66, a gain of 242 points or 1.80 percent from its closing figure Friday.

At the same time S&P CNX Nifty index of the National Stock Exchange was trading at 4,099.00 points with a gain of 83 points or 2.07 percent from its last close.

The market breadth was positive. On BSE, 1,167 shares advanced, 297 declined and 29 remained unchanged.

Reliance Infrastructure, BHEL and Jaiprakash Associate were among the major gainers in initial trade.
