DTC to roll out over 1,000 buses Monday
October 17th, 2010 - 7:33 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, Oct 17 (IANS) The Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) will Monday roll out for public use over 1,000 buses which transported delegates, athletes and spectators during the Oct 3-14 Commonwealth Games.
“As many as 1,174 buses will be added to the present fleet of nearly 6,000 vehicles with the corporation,” a DTC official told IANS.
Of the 1,174 buses, 574 red air-conditioned ones were used during the Games to transport politicians from India and participating countries, athletes, media and technical staff. Around 600 green buses were used for spectators.
Keeping in view the departure of athletes and delegates to their respective countries, the DTC decided to use the buses from Oct 18, the official said.
In the runup to the Games, Delhi has also got its largest depot in the Millennium Park Depot, which has parking space for over 1,000 low-floor buses - one of the largest in the country.
The Rs.74 crore complex is spread over 65 acres on the banks of the Yamuna river.
The Games helped the state-run corporation to modernise its infrastructure in terms of facilities like washing plants, better parking lots besides property security apparatus at the depots, the official said.
Better roads and flyovers leading to smooth running of buses would help the DTC lower its maintenance costs, he added.
Around 1,600 Blueline buses, which were temporarily taken off the roads due to the Games, will also be back on the city’s roads Monday.
