Pranab Mukherjee New Delhi, Feb 22 (IANS) The finance ministry has finalised the design for the proposed national tax headquarters to come up on Kasturba Gandhi Marg in central Delhi, an official statement said Tuesday.

The design of Mumbai-based Vistaar Architects and Planners has been finalised after holding an open competition, in which 58 firms participated, in association with the Council of Architecture, the finance ministry statement here.

The new tax headquarters will be built on a 5.65 acre plot already allotted for the purpose.

“The design of the building is unique in the sense that the entire building rests on nine vertical cores and is essentially hung top-down from a set of large trusses which span the cores,” the statement said.

“This allows for the ground level to be almost entirely free and mingle with the existing and the developed landscape seamlessly. The openness and transparency characterized by both external and inward looking facades, are consistent with the financial governance priorities of the government’s revenue administration.”

Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee had laid the foundation stone for the project in 2009.
