Demand for designer lamps rises in Hyderabad ahead of Diwali
October 27th, 2010 - 7:23 pm ICT by ANIHyderabad, Oct. 27 (ANI): The demand for designer lamps has risen here in the run-up to the festival of lights - Diwali.
People, who are engaged in the sale of designer lamps and ‘diyas’, or traditional earthen lamps, said the demand for designer lamps is high and added that they are doing brisk business.
“Our business is going good. People are being attracted to our shop and are buying lamps in large quantities. So our business is doing well, and every shopkeeper is being benefited,” said Laxman, a shopkeeper.
Twinkling earthen and designer lamps light up every home and firework displays are common across the country on this festival.
Customers said many kinds of lamps are there in markets now.
“During our childhood days, we only had ‘diyas’ (traditional earthen lamps) available in the market, but now designer lamps are available in the market in different shapes and sizes. We light lamps on the occasion of Diwali to remove darkness and brighten our lives and spread happiness,” said Venkateshwar Rao, a resident of the city.
Available in scores of designs and shapes, the price tags of designer lamps depend upon their sizes, styles and embellishments.
Diwali, which falls in October-November, has its origins in the celebrations in Ayodhya city in northern India, marking the return of Hindu god Lord Ram to his kingdom after defeating Ravan, the powerful demon king of Lanka.
Legend says millions of lamps were lit when Lord Ram returned after 14 years of exile in forests and the fight against Ravan.
Diwali is also celebrated in honour of Lakshmi, the Hindu goddess of wealth and prosperity. It is believed that Lakshmi, signifying prosperity, comes into those homes that are clean and well lit. (ANI)
