Delhi’s Chandni Chowk to get a facelift
December 6th, 2011 - 12:35 am ICT by IANSNew Delhi, Dec 5 (IANS) Delhi’s walled city will soon be getting a facelift, focusing not only on beautification but also on conserving the cultural heritage.
Two projects — tucking the dangerously dangling electric wires underground and addressing the traffic congestion — will be undertaken in the first phase in Chandni Chowk by the Shahjahanabad Redevelopment Corporation (SRDC).
“There will be no dearth of funds for this purpose and the work relating to laying underground the hanging cables will be completed in next few months,” said Delhi Urban Development Minister A.K. Walia.
According to SRDC, the first project will effectively take care of the dangling wires which, apart from being an eyesore, can result in a major accident as a small spark may lead to a blaze in the congested neighborhood.
The second project aims at taking remedial measure to decongest the current mixed traffic in a way that is economically feasible as well as technologically viable.
Some of the major roads which will be covered under the first phase are: the main road from the Red Fort to Lahore Gate, Church Mission Road, Esplanade Road, H.C.Sen Road, Naya Bazar, Khari Bowli, Nai Sarak and Dariba.
