New Delhi, Sep 2 (IANS) Delhiites may get their individual unique ID numbers in three years, Unique Indentificaiton Authority of India Chairman Nandan Nilekani said Wednesday.
“Delhi as a state is much ahead in this respect than other states. With utilisation of this database (of Mission Convergence) the authority would be in a position to issue unique ID numbers to the residents of Delhi within three years,” Nilekani said.

He met Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit at her office and gave a presentation on the unique ID project.

He said the unique ID number will be issued to all residents of the country including children and students. “Unique ID would be able to retrieve information in respect of name, date of birth, address, parents’ names and bio-metric details including all fingerprints,” he stated.

An official statement said: “Issue of unique ID to most of the persons will overcome problem of duplicate and bogus identity (documents). It would prove to be helpful in implementation of flagship schemes of the central and state governments. It will also be a useful source for online verification and authentication.”

Nilekani also expressed his keenness to make use of a database prepared by the ‘Mission Convergence’ of the Delhi government and appreciated their efforts in preparing the database.

Dikshit said the database of 900,000 households and 4.2 million people is more comprehensive as it is based on additional biometric information and other details.
