Delhi women to get free bus rides on Rakhi day
August 23rd, 2010 - 3:20 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, Aug 23 (IANS) Women in the capital city can enjoy a free ride in public buses Tuesday on the occasion of Raksha Bandhan, Chief Minister Shiela Dikshit announced Monday.
“Women in Delhi would be able to travel free of cost in DTC (Delhi Transport Corporation) buses on Raksha Bandhan day. The decision has been taken to ensure that women can easily reach their brothers’ place,” said Dikshit.
She said women will be allowed to ride free in all ordinary DTC buses and the green low-floor buses till 5 p.m. Tuesday.
Raksha Bandhan celebrates the bond of love between brothers and sisters. On the occasion, a sister ties a rakhi (decorative thread) on her brother’s wrist and in turn he gives her gifts and vows to protect her.
Haryana last week announced that women in the state would be allowed free rides on the state transport buses on the Raksha Bandhan day. Both Delhi and Haryana are ruled by the Congress party.
