Delhi vendors to protest against MCD
May 28th, 2010 - 9:55 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, May 28 (IANS) More than 5,000 street vendors in the capital will Tuesday protest against the Municipal Corporation of Delhi for evicting them, taking away their push carts and imposing heavy fines on them.
The National Association of Street Vendors of India (NASVI), an association which has over 300,000 members in 20 states of the country, accused the MCD of not taking effective steps in formulating and implementing a proper policy for urban street hawkers.
“The civic authority has not taken any concrete step to formulate a proper policy for urban street vendors,” Arbind Singh, programme co-ordinator of NASVI, told IANS.
“Citing Commonwealth Games as a reason, the MCD is harassing the street vendors by evicting them from various city markets. The MCD is taking away their push carts and imposing heavy fines,” he said.
“Around one hundred street vendors were evicted by the civic authorities in Uttam Nagar three days ago,” Singh informed.
“Over 5,000 street vendors and hawkers are expected to gather near Town Hall, the headquarters of MCD, June 1 to demand formulation of a proper policy for street vendors and to stop the harassment by the civic authorities.”
