Delhi Metro’s volunteer programme gets international award
July 18th, 2010 - 6:42 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, July 18 (IANS) The Delhi Metro’s citizen forum’s volunteers programme has been selected for the distinguished honoree medal at the 2010 Stevie Awards to be held in Turkey in September, an official said Sunday.
The nominations for the award were received from 40 countries.
The volunteers’ programme won the award under “Communications or Public Relations Campaign of the year — Community Relations category”, Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) chief spokesperson Anuj Dayal said.
While the DMRC was honoured as a distinguished honoree, the National Center for Korean Traditional Performing Arts, Seoul, won the Stevie Award in this category for its Gugaknuri campaign, he said.
The jury, comprising over 50 members from about 20 countries, also verified the amount of media coverage the campaign has got, he added.
The Stevie Awards were created in 2002 in US’ Virginia to honour and generate public recognition of the efforts, accomplishments and positive contributions of companies and business people worldwide.
The forum, set up in September 2009 with 130 members, has now a total membership of 400 people, but the Delhi Metro is planning to take it to 1,000 before the Commonwealth Games in October.
It sensitises Metro rail passengers about the need to behave courteously with fellow passengers besides emphasising on the importance of etiquette, discipline and cooperation.
The volunteers also inform Metro officials if an unidentified bag or suspicious commuters are found in the Metro. These members play a crucial role in helping thwart terror incidents in the Delhi Metro.
