Lucknow/New Delhi, July 14 (IANS) Delhi Metro rail services were Thursday further extended into Uttar Pradesh, connecting the national capital to the suburban Ghaziabad in Uttar Pradesh, the state government said.

The link was made from Anand Vihar railway and inter-state bus terminus in east Delhi to Vaishali, a newly-developed residential district of Ghaziabad town.

Ghaziabad became the second Uttar Pradesh town after Noida to be connected with the Delhi Metro network. The Metro line to Noida was opened in November 2009, officials said.

“The chief minister was unable to join the formal ceremony at Vaishali, where she sent her nominee and cabinet colleague Swami Prasad Maurya,” stated an official press release issued on behalf of Chief Minister Mayawati in Lucknow.

According to the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), the line to Vaishali from Delhi’s Dwarka sub-city Sector 21 has become the second longest corridor of the Metro network with a route length of approximately 46 km. Earlier, the line from Dwarka Sector 21 terminated at Anand Vihar rail and bus terminus. Dwarka Sector 21 to Noida is the longest stretch of the Metro at 49 km.

“The extension of the stretch (from Anand Vihar) will help the passengers from the large residential area of Vaishali. They can access the Metro and can look forward to a more comfortable and reduced travel time,” said Anuj Dayal, spokesperson of the DMRC.

While covering Kaushambhi, another major residential area, on the way, the new Vaishali extension would enable the Metro to carry about 60,000 passengers daily, the release said.

The extension of this Metro corridor, carried out jointly by Ghaziabad Development Authority and the DMRC, incurred a cost of about Rs.280 crore, it said.

The Metro was operating 56 trains on this corridor. With the Ghaziabad line, the number of trains has increased up to 58.

A Metro rail project is already in progress to connect Dilshad Garden in east Delhi to Mohan Nagar in Ghaziabad district as a part of the second phase of the project, according to the release.

Meanwhile, an extension plan has also been prepared for expanding the Metro network further into Noida, it said.

The state government has also given its consent for the implementation of a Rapid Rail Transport Service project for running high speed trains between Delhi and Meerut, it stated.
