December 23rd, 2010 - 9:13 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, Dec 23 (IANS) The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) will induct two six-coach trains on the Dwarka-Noida and Dwarka-Anand Vihar lines from Thursday night as a step to ease rush in metro trains.According to DMRC, the move will give more space and comfortable ride for commuters, given the huge rush in the present four-coach trains.
DMRC Director (Rolling Stock) H.S. Anand said: “The two six-coach trains are ready for induction after exhaustive tests and trials, but one train will start its journey from the Yamuna Bank station at 9.30 p.m. Thursday, while the other will be operational from Friday.”
Initially, the two six-coach trains for passenger services will be plied on Dwarka Sector 21 to Noida City Centre and Dwarka Sector 21 to Anand Vihar lines.
“There are specific stopping points of our four-coach trains on the platforms but once the six-coach trains come, the points will change. To get passengers used to the change, the stopping points have been changed on the platforms of this route from Thursday morning itself,” he said.
He also informed that six-coach trains are likely to be introduced on the Jahangirpuri-HUDA City Centre line by Feb 15 as this metro stretch, one of the busiest, carries about 12 lakh passengers daily.
The additional coaches will be able to carry about 600 more passengers per trip.
At present a four-coach train has a carrying capacity ranging from 1200 to 1500 passengers. The six-coach train will be able to carry about 1800 to 2100 passengers per trip.
“As of now the DMRC carries about 16 lakh passengers daily. With the introduction of six-coach trains on various metro stretches, the Delhi Metro aims to carry 25 lakh passengers by October 2011,” a Delhi metro official said.
He also said that additional trains are to be introduced to ease rush in some of the major metro corridor and the work is to be completed by October 2011.
Detailing the process, the DMRC official informed that on Line 2 from Jahangirpuri to Huda City Centre, at present there are 54 trains to which six more trains will be added. Out of the 60 trains on Line 2, 54 will have six coaches.
Besides this, Line 1 which plies from Dilshad Garden to Rithala currently has 25 trains to which four more will be added, but they will ply only four-coach trains.
At present 64 trains ply on Line 3 from Noida city centre to Dwarka sector 21. DMRC is planning to introduce seven more trains. Of the total 71 trains, 39 will be six-coach and 32 will be four-coach trains by October 2011.
