New Delhi, May 10 (IANS) More than 2,000 additional smart cards were sold Monday on the first day of Delhi Metro’s Smart Card Week, an official said.

“On an average, about 10,000 new smart cards are sold at Metro stations every day. On Monday, about 2,906 extra cards were sold,” Delhi Metro spokesperson Anuj Dayal said Tuesday.

Special automatic card counters have been set up at 20 Metro stations that witness the maximum footfall, including Kashmere Gate, Rajiv Chowk, Laxmi Nagar, Anand Vihar and Chandni Chowk.

The stations are displaying banners and advertisements highlighting the 10 percent discount in fares and other benefits of card usage.

According to Delhi Metro, at present over 60 percent of passengers, numbering 900,000, use smart cards on a regular basis.

“The Smart Card Week is an initiative to increase this figure substantially to a level similar to that of the other Metro systems like Singapore and Hong Kong, where almost 100 percent of Metro users rely on smart cards,” Dayal said.
