‘Delhi markets suffered huge loss during Games’
October 15th, 2010 - 8:34 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, Oct 15 (IANS) Markets in the national capital suffered huge losses during Oct 3-14 Commonwealth Games, a traders’ forum claimed Friday.
The Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) claimed that a survey conducted among commercial establishments in Delhi found that the business went down by nearly 30-40 percent during the period.
“They (organisers) may be rejoicing for a successful Commonwealth Games but traders gained nothing from it. Also, the experience was contrary to the tall claims made by different authorities from time to time prior to the Games that CWG will boost the business and economy of Delhi,” said CAIT secretary general Praveen Khandelwal.
Khandelwal said the regular inflow of traders from other states also witnessed deep fall.
He said that the festival season in Delhi has begun and will be followed by wedding season till mid-December. But, the traders were still waiting for their business to pick up again, he said.
The traders’ forum also criticised the CWG Organising Committee for “miserably failing” to draw any programme to ensure visits of participants to these markets.
