Delhi government to sell pulses at subsidised rates
July 28th, 2009 - 8:59 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, July 28 (IANS) Delhiites, hit by a sudden rise in prices of pulses, can heave a sigh of relief with Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit Tuesday launching 80 retail outlets across the capital where pulses will be sold at subsidised rates.
Dikshit said Chana Dal in 1 kg packet would be available at Rs.34, Moong Dhuli at Rs.58, Urad Dhuli at Rs.49 and Arhar at Rs.75 against the market prices of Rs.36, Rs.68, Rs.65 and Rs.83 respectively.
She said people can purchase unlimited quantity of pulses in one kg packets without producing any documents at the 80 outlets and Delhi Secretariat between 9.30 a.m. and 5 p.m. on all seven days of the week.
“The pulses available at our stalls are of good quality. My government is committed to provide relief to aam admi (common man), including housewives, in Delhi,” Dikshit told reporters here.
Dikshit said strict action would be taken against those indulging in hoarding.
Delhi Food Minister Haroon Yusuf said his department has done all the arrangements properly so that interests of consumers could be safeguarded properly.
“Due to various reasons like less production of pulses in the country, continuation of drought-like situation in some parts of northern India, there has been substantial increase in the prices of pulses all over India and so also in Delhi,” he said.
“Since the first week of July, there has been a substantial difference between prices of pulses in wholesale and retail,” he added.
Yusuf said to ensure that prices of these pulses do not increase further in the wholesale and retail markets, the Delhi Dal and Besan Mills Association and Delhi Grain Merchant Association have joined hands with the government.
