New Delhi, Dec 8 (IANS) Enraged at the civic corporation’s drive to seal off allegedly illegal or unsafe buildings in east Delhi’s congested Lalita Park, the owners of such structures Wednesday manhandled a civic councillor and blocked a busy road to vent their protest.

A multi-storeyed building with illegal floors collapsed in the area on the night of Nov 15, killing 69 people and injuringabout 200.

When the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) officials approached the area Wednesday, locals created a ruckus and a group of building owners allegedly manhandled councillor Sohan Lal in a parking lot.

Also, around 20 people protested on the busy, arterial Vikas Marg road, blocking traffic.

The civic officials sealed or demolished portions of 17 buildings which, they said, violated the permissible height limit of 15 metres.

“The whole buildings were not sealed. Only the fourth or fifth floors of buildings which were above the permissible 15 metres were demolished,” an MCD official said.

The civic agency has asked the owners of 638 buildings in Shahdara South Zone to conduct structural safety checking of their houses and apply to the MCD for regularising them.
