Deep sea port to come up on reclaimed land in Bengal

Haldia (West Bengal), Feb 4 (IANS) A new deep sea port will come up at Sagar in West Bengal by reclaiming 2,000 acres of land through dredging, Railways Minister Mamata Banerjee announced here Friday.Banerjee said not a single plot of land will have to be acquired for the project to be built by the shipping ministry.
“The silt will be channelised through an underground tunnel to form an artificial island at an identified receptacle. The artificial island will form the base for the port,” she said at a railway function.
Kolkata Port Trust chairman M.L. Meena said similar facilities have come up on reclaimed land in Europe, besides in China and Singapore.
