Decision on reinstating Hyundai workers deferred
September 14th, 2010 - 2:25 am ICT by IANSChennai, Sep 13 (IANS) The Tamil Nadu government has deferred to Sep 20 a decision on the reinstatement of 35 dismissed workers of Hyundai Motor India Ltd despite promising to settle this by Monday, a union leader said.
“The Labour Commissioner (Hans Raj Verma) wanted a week’s time. In the afternoon, he had asked us to wait assuring that the matter would be sorted out today (Monday) itself. But for some unknown reasons it did not happen,” General Secretary of Centre for Indian Trade Union (CITU) A. Soundararajan told IANS late Monday after the deliberations.
The Hyundai Motor India Employees Union (HMIEU) is affiliated to CITU.
“We are not happy with the labour department defaulting on its commitment on deadlines. We have decided to wait for one more week,” he added.
A decision on reinstating the dismissed workers is being deffered for the third time.
The Hyundai management and HMIEU had signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) in June.
As per the MoU, a review committee was constituted to prepare a report on the reinstatement of the dismissed employees.
While the representatives of HMIEU and the company have submitted their arguments on the reinstatement, the labour commissioner officials have to give their recommendation which is binding on both the parties.
