Decision on reinstating Hyundai workers again deferred
September 20th, 2010 - 9:51 pm ICT by IANSChennai, Sep 20 (IANS) The Tamil Nadu government has deferred a decision on reinstatement of 35 dismissed workers of Hyundai Motor India Ltd for the fourth time, despite promising a decision Monday, a union leader said.
“The labour commissioner’s office has given us a letter stating that the final meeting of tripartite committee is scheduled at 2 p.m. Wednesday to finalise their report,” Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) general secretary A. Soundararajan told IANS.
“We thought of staging a hunger strike. But officials assured us of a final decision Wednesday,” he added.
The Hyundai Motor India Employees Union (HMIEU) is affiliated to CITU.
The Hyundai management and HMIEU had signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) in June, according to which a review committee was constituted to prepare a report on the reinstatement of the dismissed employees.
While the representatives of HMIEU and the company have submitted their arguments on the reinstatement, the labour commissioner officials have to give their recommendation, which is binding on both the parties.
