Darjeeling tea e-auction expected soon
February 8th, 2012 - 9:24 pm ICT by IANSKolkata, Feb 8 (IANS) The auction centre here is expected to commence electronic auction of Darjeeling tea, known the world over for its aroma and taste, from the next financial year.
A top executive of Calcutta Tea Traders Association said Wednesday: “We wanted everything to be in order before we commenced (e-auction).
“At the moment there are still some glitches which are being addressed by NCIT (National Centre for Information Technology) which is doing our software for the e-auction.
“Once this is ironed out, we hope to start the Darjeeling (tea) e-auction,” Association chairperson Sangeeta Kichlu told reporters here.
She said the objective of the e-auction was to have maximum reach to maximum buyers.
The Kolkata Auction Centre is the oldest surviving centre in the world. It is the largest auction centre in India.
Electronic auction of tea was introduced in Kolkata in 2009 for all varieties of tea except Darjeeling teas which are still sold in the manual outcry method.
Kichlu said this year total production of Darjeeling tea was expected to be about seven million kg.
