Corruption sparks protest in Srinagar
November 15th, 2011 - 4:40 pm ICT by IANSSrinagar, Nov 15 (IANS) Nearly 400 men and women held a noisy but peaceful protest here Tuesday against rampant corruption in Jammu and Kashmir.
“If previous surveys placed Jammu and Kashmir at no 2 after Bihar as the most corrupt state in the country, I am sure today our state is no 1,” said M. Ayoub Ashmandry, leader of the protesters.
Traders, unemployed youth and others took part in the demonstration in the heart of the city and lasted an hour.
The protesters also denounced the fuel price hike and the new recruitment policy announced by the state government.
“We demand a rollback of the fuel price hike, jobs for the jobless, and financial assistance to industrial units,” Ashmandry said.
“We also want an end to rampant corruption which has paralysed every routine activity, better power supply, stoppage of donations by private schools for school admissions and better wages paid to contractual and ad-hoc employees,” he added.
