Coordination needed to bring down food inflation: Congress
January 7th, 2011 - 9:32 pm ICT by IANS
New Delhi, Jan 7 (IANS) With the government under opposition’s attack over rising food inflation, the Congress Friday said both central and state governments have to work in coordination to bring prices under control.Congress spokesman Shakeel Ahmed said Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee has written to state chief ministers asking them to take steps against hoarders and black-marketers.
“The prices can be brought down with coordination between the state and central governments,” Ahmed said.
He said both internal and external factors were responsible for rise in food prices.
High prices of food items, especially onions, led to a sharp spike in India’s annual food inflation to 18.32 percent for the week ended Dec 25, compared to 14.44 percent the week before.
The Bharatiya Janata Party and the Left have criticised the government for not doing enough to check food inflation.
