China completes tunnel under Yellow river
January 9th, 2012 - 12:05 am ICT by IANSBeijing, Jan 8 (IANS) China has completed the construction of a tunnel under the Yellow river as part of a huge south-north water diversion project, the government said Sunday.Water diverted from the Yangtze, China’s largest river, will flow through the tunnel to the parched northern provinces.
Shandong and Hebei provinces, as well as the Tianjin municipality will benefit, reports Xinhua.
The 585-meter-long tunnel, nine meters in diameter, will divert 442 million cubic meters of water annually.
The project, costing 613 million yuan (about $97 million), took four years to complete.
The project was first conceived by Chinese leader Mao Zedong in 1952. The Cabinet approved it in December 2002.
The project raised concerns over land use, impact on agriculture and human suffering in the wake of relocations.
