November 22nd, 2011 - 3:40 pm ICT by IANSRaipur, Nov 22 (IANS) Coal-rich Chhattisgarh will add 1,500 MW electricity by 2012 that will raise its power generation capacity to 3,424 MW from the current 1,924 MW, official sources said Tuesday.
“The work on 1,000 MW power project at Marwa-Tendubhata in Janjgir district and 500 MW Korba West power project are going on at war-footing and both projects will begin generation by 2012. It will raise Chhattisgarh government’s power generation capacity to 3,424 MW,” an official of the energy department told IANS.
Both the Marwa and the Korba West are coal-fired projects and being implemented by Chhattisgarh Power Generation Company Ltd, which is spending Rs.6,318 crore on Marwa project and Rs.3,156 crore on Korba West.
Chhattisgarh has roughly 18-20 percent of India’s estimated coal reserves. The state government has signed dozens of deals with private sector power producers in the past five years.
But the majority of these projects have been delayed because the central government is yet to make a final decision whether companies be allowed to mine coal in the state’s no-go areas, as marked by the union environment and forests ministry.
