State Bank of India Raipur, Sep 16 (IANS) Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Raman Singh Wednesday justified the commercial tax department’s decision Monday to attach a bank account of Bhilai Steel Plant (BSP) to recover Rs.408 crore due as entry tax amount.
“The government has right to levy entry tax and Bhilai Steel Plant should have abided by government decision,” Singh told reporters here.

The government attached the State Bank of India account of the flagship unit of the public sector Steel Authority of India Ltd (SAIL) after the plant failed to meet a three-day deadline to clear the dues.

It had issued notice to the Bhilai plant, located some 30 km west of Raipur, after the Chhattisgarh High Court okayed the state government’s decision to levy entry tax on the unit.

In a statement Tuesday, Bhilai Steel said the action against it was taken without it being given sufficient time.

“Without even considering the request for grant of time to deposit the amount of entry tax of Rs.408 crore (approximately) and even before the expiry of the notice period of three days, the commercial tax authorities issued further notice to the State Bank of India directing attachment of all credits to the account of Bhilai Steel Plant,” the statement said.
