April 30th, 2010 - 9:53 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, April 30 (IANS) The first phase of the Census 2011 will begin in Maoist-hit Chhattisgarh Saturday along with five other states of Haryana, Delhi, Punjab, Uttarakhand and Maharashtra, a home ministry statement said.
Census takers will have a tough task to go house to house for the once-in-a-decade exercise in the Left-wing violence-hit districts of Chhattisgarh.
The first phase of the population count, that includes house listing and housing census, began April 1.
The mammoth exercise has already been undertaken in West Bengal, Assam, the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Goa, Kerala, Lakshadweep, Orissa, Himachal Pradesh, Karnataka, Arunachal Pradesh, Chandigarh, Gujarat, Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu, Tripura and Andhra Pradesh.
The census exercise provides the biggest source of data on demographic, economic and other characteristics of the population that helps the government to formulate its development programmes.
